Lighting the Way
We were so honored when Barbara Peltan commissioned me to create a sculpture honoring her husband Mark, who had passed away a few years ago. Although I didn’t know him while he was alive, it has been wonderful learning about him through Barbara, as well as from friends and family.
Mark was a psychotherapist who began the Mental Health program at Mercy Hospital in Mason City Iowa. He was beloved by friends, patients, the staff at the hospital, and of course, his family.
Long legs: rising above life’s challenges
Lantern: Mark brought light in many ways and was a light in so many ways.
Roses on the base and in the footsteps of the figure: Mark’s love of his garden and specifically roses is well known. Metaphorically the roses represent the growth and beauty that Mark created as he moved through the world.
In addition to being a sculpture inspired by Mark, we hope that the message of the sculpture will inspire not just those who knew Mark, but everyone who sees this figure bringing light into the world.
